BA-101 | Dcn. Michael Gillingham | Ministering to Youth and Their Families in a time of Gender Fluidity (adults) | We live in a time and culture where people are asking huge questions about sexuality, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identities. As youth leaders (both professional and volunteer), we seek to love, support, and teach our youth to navigate these emerging conversations with love, grace, and truth. We’ll begin with a very brief discussion of relevant terms and then shift into a conversation about how best to respond in these emerging moments of youth ministry today. | Dcn. Michael Gillingham is a rostered deacon (DPS) in LCC who has served for thirty years in youth ministry, young adult ministry, and music ministry in congregations in western Canada. He has more recently shifted into a new job where he serves as “missionary deacon” with LAMP (Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots). Michael currently works with northern communities and with teams from churches in Canada and the US who seek to provide ministry to kids and adults in these communities. Michael’s interest in questions surrounding gender and sexuality emerged as he worked with youth and families and also as he attended graduate school at a local public university. Michael is hoping that his presentations will provide some helpful information and suggestions for engaging with these questions in positive ways. Michael is a husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather as well as a songwriter and sports fan (go Elks!! go Oilers!!). He is a long time supporter of the LCC National Youth Gathering and is glad to be able to attend and present there this year. |

BA-110 | Pastor Peter Knelson | Bow or Be Canceled: Sexuality in a Digital World |
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced intense pressure to bow to a god made by human hands—but they stood firm in their identity as God’s people. Today, we face a similar pressure: to place our identity in our sexuality, to define ourselves by it, and to explore it on the world’s terms. In a culture that demands we bow, how do we stand? This presentation will encourage you to build your identity on Christ—an identity that is eternal, rooted in His promises, and secure in the hope of the resurrection. |
Pastor Peter Knelson grew up in Saskatchewan, where youth gatherings played a pivotal role in shaping his faith and fostering friendships. Although he never had the chance to attend a National Youth Gathering as a youth, he’s making up for it now—serving as the MC for the 2025 NYG! His hope is that today’s youth will find this gathering just as impactful, inspiring, and fun as his own experiences. Pastor Peter serves St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warman and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bergheim, Saskatchewan. When he’s not pastoring, he’s helping his wife, Laurel, keep up with their two energetic kids. And when the house finally quiets down, you’ll often find him playing guitar and recording music. He can’t wait to stand alongside you in putting on the full armor of God! |
BA-111 | Richard Fangrad | Making Sense of Creation, Evolution, Science and Christianity | Is creation just a religious belief and evolution is science-based? Is science at odds with Christianity? This session will clarify these questions and related concepts. |
Richard is CEO of Creation Ministries-Canada, and producer and co-host of the weekly, half-hour TV show Creation Magazine LIVE!. Richard has been speaking on the creation/evolution issue since 1994. The Canadian CMI office began as a room in his home in late 1998. As a speaker, he is known for his easy-to-understand scientific presentations. Richard grew up in a Christian home but by high school he had many unanswered questions about creation, Genesis and the accuracy of the Bible that greatly hindered his spiritual growth. This began to change in 1994 after hearing Dr Carl Wieland (from CMI-Australia) and subscribing to Creation magazine, and reading other resources on apologetics. Richard’s education and professional training is in electronics and he had the privilege of working on some of the most technologically advanced electronics for more than a decade before joining CMI. Richard is married and lives in Kitchener, Ontario with his wife and 5 children. |
BA-201 | Jennifer Kerr and Pastor Robert Bugbee | Q & A with your Co-Main Speakers | Do you have questions about your faith, the church, mental/emotional/relational health, and training cats how to dance? Well then, you should attend this breakout session! Your gathering co-main speakers, Pastor Robert Bugbee and Jennifer Kerr, have experience and expertise to share. (Okay, maybe not so much about the teaching cats to dance part, but they could give it a shot if you want.) Pastor Robert and Jennifer are looking forward to an engaging conversation with you! |
Jennifer Kerr is a mental and relational health counsellor from Regina, Saskatchewan. She has a husband named Rocky, a cat named Kirby, and a guitar named Bennett. Throughout her time working with kids, youth, and young adults in many different organizations, Jennifer knew she wanted to grow in her abilities to serve young people and families. That led her to complete her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and become a professional counsellor. Jennifer has been part of many LC-C youth gatherings as a musician, and spoke at Impact 2023 on mental health from a faith perspective, but this is her first time as a co-main speaker. She is pumped to attend Unbreakable in 2025! Find Jennifer online at www.throughtherapy.ca. Rev. Robert Bugbee serves as a pastor at First Lutheran Church and Christian Academy in Windsor, Ontario, where he has been since 2018. From 2008 to 2018, he served as the Synod President of LCC. At the 2013 NYG in Winnipeg, Stand Firm, he served the gathering as the Bible study leader. Pastor Bugbee was born in Ohio, then studied at Wartburg College in Iowa and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, with semesters in Germany. Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, conferred on him the honourary degree Doctor of Divinity. He is married to Gail, and they have four children and ten grandchildren. |
BA-202 | Rhonda Kelman | I Am Who God Says I Am | Rhonda lives in Coquitlam, BC. She grew up in Edmonton, but loves the West Coast where she lives now. She is a member of Walnut Grove Lutheran Church and teaches Grade 1 at Hope Lutheran Christian School. Right now she is involved with the Young Adults ministry at the church. Sharing God’s love has always been a passion of hers and encouraging others to do the same! In her free time, she loves to go on road trips, hang out with friends, play board games, and her newest hobby is quilting! | Growing up I always struggled with caring too much about what others thought about me. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that I had a constant cycle of negative self-talk looping in the back of my mind. Looking throughout the Bible there are reminders that even though we are broken, God can use us to do amazing things. Through scripture, retreats, counselling, talking with pastors, and sharing my story with others, I realized how important it was to turn to scripture to redirect the negative narrative into a positive one. There is so much pressure on how we should be, but studying who God says we are will help us to remember He makes us unbreakable. |
BA-208 | Tara Hart and Ashton Hart | Songwriting for Worship – part 2 | Together we will compose a worship song during this two-session workshop that we will then perform and teach to everyone at the Gathering. We will explore key components of writing music that is appropriate for Divine service, and apply it to our ideas. Musical proficiency will be helpful, but not necessary. Come make a joyful noise to the Lord! | This workshop will be led by Canadian singer/songwriter Tara Lyn Hart and her son Ashton Hart, who is a composer for visual media, film and video games. Between them they have a vast amount of experience writing a variety of music genres, including Christian and Worship music. |
BA-209 | Pastor Ron Mohr | Faith Comes By Hearing — Bible Translation for Today | Presentation and discussion about the work of Lutheran Bible Translators, the broad scope of Bible Ministry, and the exciting opportunities for people of all ages in bringing God’s Word to people in their own heart language in every culture around the world. | Pastor Ron Mohr has been joyfully serving as Lutheran Bible Translators of Canada Executive Director since 2018. Before that he served as the East District Mission Exec and worked with the other districts in multicultural ministry. He also served as parish pastor in Tillsonburg, ON for 17 years, and began in ministry as pastor in Estevan/Midale, SK. In between he served as a full time hospital chaplain in Sarnia, ON, and Cincinnati, OH, and as a vacancy pastor in several multicultural congregations along the way. |
BA-210 | Pastor Scott Brayall | Playing the Role | In this drama breakout session, we will be examining the different individuals from the Scripture passages examined at NYG: UNBREAKABLE. Pre-written monologues will be provided, allowing all participants to step into a character, imagine the world around them, and ultimately, to meditate upon what God’s constant grace and protection, demonstrated to the Bible character, means for them. For those interested we will allow time for presentation and feedback (though stage time at the breakout will not be enforced; stage-fright need not keep you away from this session!). | Pastor Scott is Assistant Pastor at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Red Deer, Alberta. Married to Becky, they have two boys, Herschel and Lionel. They frequent coffee shops more than anyone should legally be allowed to, probably. Pastor Scott enjoys playing trumpet and guitar and rarely stops singing, and he loved spending time on the stage, but that has been more than a few years—so you should join him in the breakout sessions and see how rusty he is! He has been your (co)MC at previous NYG and IMPACT Youth Gatherings, but this time he’s enjoying being a 7+1 leader among other roles. He’s overjoyed that you are at the NYG that you may know just how graciously and wonderfully your God equips you—the faith that He has given to you will surely protect you through this life into life everlasting. |
BA-211 | Prayer Walk | Need a break from the breakouts? Come take part in our prayer walk and find some quiet time actively in prayer. | The prayer walk was organized by Pastor Eric, and the room will be staffed by Minions during the breakout sessions. |
